Entry Requirements for the Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND in Computing

The criteria to join the Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND in Computing qualification has been set to welcome students from a broad range of backgrounds. There are, however, certain requirements that must be fulfilled:

  • BTEC Level 3 qualification in a related subject area
  • GCE Advanced Level profile demonstrating strong performance in a relevant subject. This is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C
  • Other related Level 3 qualification
  • Access to a Higher Education Certificate, or
  • Related work experience
  • Students who are non-native English speakers or who have not studied the final two years of school in English must demonstrate capability in English at a standard equivalent to IELTS 5.5

Course Structure

The Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND in Computing is divided into core and optional modules. To graduate from the HND course in Computing, you must achieve a minimum of 210 credits over the two-year study period (consisting of at least 105 credits within each year).

Students studying the HND course in Computing during the day are required to attend two full days of study per week: Monday to Saturday. The days of study vary and can be discussed during the application process. Students studying in the evening are required to attend four evenings per week: Monday to Thursday. The mode of delivery is the same across all campuses. In addition to the HND course in Computing, students are required to attend professional development sessions which aim to develop their academic, study and language skills to support their academic and professional progress.

How You Will Learn

While studying for the Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND in Computing, you will be taught in a variety of ways including lectures, practical sessions, workshops and lectures by guest speakers.


Assessments of the BTEC Level 5 HND Computing are undertaken in various ways such as delivering presentations, writing assignments, analysing case studies, completing portfolios of evidence or writing reports. There are no formal examinations required for this course.

During your course of study, we help you develop the practical and managerial skills required to work in the IT sector. You will also gain transferable skills such as teamwork, research skills, verbal and non-verbal communication, problem solving and analytical skills.

You will be required to supplement the classroom-based education with independent study in the form of research, homework tasks or group work. Self-study is vital to your success in this course, and lecturers will guide you throughout the study period on how best to approach independent study.

Where Could the BTEC Level 5 HND in Computing Take You?

Once you have completed the course, you can convert your Computing HND into a full bachelor’s degree by taking a one-year top-up programme at various institutions around the UK. Alternatively, you could seek a career in computing in roles such as an e-commerce web developer, software engineer or systems administrator.

This course is offered in partnership with New City College. Students may be admitted to this course through New City College which will be determined at the admissions stage.

Under our collaborative partnership with New City College (NCC), each successful applicant will be officially registered as an NCC student. Students will have access to all teaching, learning and support facilities offered by UKCBC at all its campuses. In addition, students registered as NCC students will additionally have the benefits of access to NCC learning and recreation facilities at NCC’s Redbridge Campus. UKCBC is currently not offering any direct admissions to students on HND programmes other than through the NCC partnership.
